Flossing and brushing your teeth twice a day may be one way to prevent cavities and decay, but even those who take great care of their teeth should visit our friendly smile experts at Ivy Rose Family Dentistry for a cleaning every six months. This one-hour visit can uncover many oral health issues like cavities, periodontal disease and even oral cancer that could worsen if not treated.

Good oral hygiene is important, not only for looks, but for general health as well. Poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of dental and medical problems such as gum disease, infection, bone loss, heart disease, strokes and more. Regular check ups and cleanings can prevent these problems as well as provide you with good oral hygiene.

People who clean their teeth regularly at home and have periodic professional cleanings are investing time and money into having healthy, strong teeth into old age. In addition, periodic visits to dental professionals for teeth cleanings can enable dental hygienists or dentists to check for larger, long-term problems, such as cavities or periodontal disease.

The Clinical Dental Examination

Next, your dentist assesses the state of your teeth and gums by:

Examining the gums

Looking for signs of gum disease

Checking for loose teeth

Looking at the tissues inside of your mouth

Examining your tongue

Checking your bite

Looking for visual evidence of tooth decay

Checking for broken teeth

Checking for damaged fillings

Looking for changes in the gums covering teeth

Evaluating any dental appliance you have

Checking the contact between your teeth

Taking X-rays

The Dental Cleaning

During the final part of the dental visit, your dental professional cleans your mouth using these methods:

Checking the cleanliness of your teeth and gums

Removing any plaque and tartar

Polishing your teeth

Flossing between your teeth

Reviewing recommended brushing and flossing techniques

To begin with, the dental checkup that is part of a professional cleaning in your dentist’s office can ensure that your at-home oral hygiene routine is helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and the dental hygienist can instruct you in the best methods for brushing and flossing your teeth. But even though you may be very diligent in your at-home care, brushing your teeth typically removes only about sixty-five percent of the plaque and bacteria that exist on your teeth, so a professional cleaning is important for removing the rest.

Plaque that is not removed from your teeth and gums eventually hardens into tartar which can cause a variety of problems in your mouth including cavities and gum disease. While a large percentage of plaque can be removed by flossing and brushing, tartar can only be removed by using special dental tools and procedures. As tartar (also known as calculus) forms, it continues to attract more plaque which leads to the formation of more tartar. Calculus is typically removed by manual scaling of the teeth or by using an ultrasonic device. If tartar exists below the gum line, a deep periodontal cleaning known as scaling and root planing becomes necessary.

1. To Prevent Oral Cancer
2. To Prevent Gum Disease
3. To Help Maintain Good Physical Health
4. To Keep Your Teeth
5. To Detect Dental Problems Early
6. To Maintain Good Oral Health
7. To Use Your Dental Insurance Plan
8. To Create a Treatment Plan
9. To Have a Bright and White Smile
10. To Prevent Bad Breath

Depending on your overall oral health, your dentist may recommend a dental cleaning appointment every two to six months. For people who have a tendency to tartar buildup more frequent cleanings may be recommended because they are important for keeping the tartar in check and controlling the possibility of gum disease.

Sedation Dentistry refers to the use of sedation during dental treatment. Sedation is most commonly used during extensive procedures.

Dentistry has been around for over 100 years, and has continued to evolve over the last 40 years as more options are made available to patients. In order to perform sedation, dentists are required to become accredited and complete additional training. However, its widespread acceptance and use has come about more slowly than medical sedation.

While it is common practice to be sedated by doctors for medical procedures, for some time there has been the misconception that routine dental work is not uncomfortable enough to justify the use of sedation. Fortunately, dental sedation is now used worldwide. It has proven to be a safe and effective option for a variety of patients and procedures.

Sedation can range from the use of nitrous oxide to calm a patient to general anesthetics used to put patients to sleep. Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.

Experience the following sensations:

Tingling of your hands and feet

Warmth

Numbness in your legs

Numbness of your hands, feet, tongue and other soft tissues of your mouth

A ringing sensation or droning sound; hearing may become distant, but more distinct

Feelings of euphoria

Feelings of heaviness or lightness in your extremities

Some reasons for avoiding the dentist include:

Fear of needles, drills, or other dental instruments

Past traumatic dental experiences

Sensitive teeth and/or difficulty getting numb

Discomfort with the smells, noises, and tastes that accompany dental work

Benefits of nitrous oxide:

It’s effective for mild to moderate anxiety

Proven safety record

Offers an analgesic (pain relieving) effect

It’s quick-acting, with few side effects

You don’t need someone to escort you to and from the office

You can return to normal activities immediately

In many cases, you can get ALL of your dental work done in one visit

Most people want a great smile, and adults know that it can make a great difference not only in their personal but also their professional lives. Many say the payoff is worth the temporary inconvenience and expense of braces.

Orthodontic treatment at any age is one of the most fantastic cosmetic dental procedures available today. Although it takes a little longer to complete than many of the other cosmetic dental procedures it has some significant advantages in that once completed it requires little or no ongoing cost to maintain the result for the rest of your lifetime. Moving your teeth can also add youthfulness to your face by changing the shape of your jaw and face, and adding increased support for your lips reducing the need for other cosmetic procedures to the face.

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to make the best of your teeth. This includes allowing you to bite correctly, eat more comfortably and care for your teeth and gums more easily. And your smile will benefit too.

Treatment almost always involves using braces to straighten crooked, crowded or protruding teeth, close gaps between teeth and correct the bite of the teeth, so the top and bottom teeth meet when you close your mouth.

Treatment usually lasts from 18 months to two years, with visits to the orthodontist required every four to six weeks.

If activities like talking, arguing, and making speeches are a crucial part of your career life, you will have to correct your dental imperfections without further delay. Now, would any client wish to hire a lawyer who exhibits slurred speech due to the defects in his teeth? And in case you are a dentist with flawed teeth, won’t your clients question you about your dental defects?
Even if you are not a lawyer or a dentist, you should wear braces to fix up your teeth. Of course, braces won’t give you immediate results and you would have to wait for some time to enjoy the outcome. But, remember, in the end you would be able to enjoy your life with a wonderful set of teeth. You will also be able to eat, talk and smile like other normal people without worrying about the imperfections in your teeth.

In case you are highly concerned about your image, first remember that your health is more important than your appearance. Now, don’t you feel uncomfortable when you are eating or talking with others due to your imperfect set of teeth? Besides, you will have to wear braces only for a specific period of time. After that, you will also have a perfect set of teeth that will never make you feel self-conscious or worried. So try to wear adult braces if you want to spend the rest of your life without worrying about your teeth.

Adult braces can improve your personal life

As you already know, today’s society places a lot of emphasis on outward appearance and good looks. So, if you feel neglected in your social circle due to your imperfect teeth, it’s time to correct your dental defects. Today hundreds of adults are using braces to straighten their crooked teeth without worrying about other issues. You can also try to achieve better dental health by following their footsteps.

Today you can even get ‘clear’ braces that match with the color of your teeth. These braces are also easy to manage and they can even be removed when you are eating or brushing your teeth. So, if you are worried about the reaction of other people, or afraid of the discomforts associated with braces, try to get these adult braces that are more comfortable and even ‘invisible’. And no one else will know that you are wearing braces!

When it comes to the different types of braces, you’ll have some control in the choice and so will your orthodontist. In most cases you’ll be given a choice between a few different choices of braces colors and you’ll be able to choose the ones that make you feel the most comfortable with your appearance while you’re on the road to having a better smile and straighter teeth.

It can be given to your child to breath during a procedure to help reduce any discomfort they have and to help them to feel calm. It has been safely used for patients of many ages in dental clinics, during child birth and in Emergency Departments for several years. It is often referred to as ‘laughing gas’.
Most children are calm, comfortable and confident in a pediatric dental office. The office is designed for young people, and pediatric dentists have additional training in caring for infants, children and adolescents. Staff members choose to work in a pediatric dental office because they like children and want to cater to their special needs. These elements combine to make your child feel relaxed and special.

Sometimes, however, a child may feel anxious before or during treatment. Your child may need more support than a gentle, caring manner to feel comfortable. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a safe, effective sedative agent used to calm a child’s fear of the dental visit and enhance effective communication. Additionally, it works well for children whose gag reflex interferes with dental treatment.

You may know this gas as happy gas or laughing gas. It is a sweet smelling, colourless gas used to ease pain and anxiety (often given at the dentist, or to ease the pain of labour).

Your child may be offered nitrous oxide gas while the doctor or nurse carries out a procedure such as stitches, dressings or a blood test. The gas helps to ease the pain and anxiety your child may feel, but usually does not make them fall fully asleep.

When your child starts to breathe the nitrous oxide, they will feel drowsy within a couple of minutes. The gas will be continued until the procedure finishes and will wear off quickly when the gas is stopped. This means your child can quickly get back to their usual activities (playing, eating etc).

When used for mild (conscious) sedation, nitrous oxide may make you feel:

Relaxed

Warm

Pleasant

Happy or silly

You also may feel:

Tingling in your hands and feet

Numbness in your mouth, feet or hands

Heaviness or lightness

Changes in the way you hear sounds (everything sounds far away or muffled or you may hear a sound described as “white noise”)

Sleepiness

A sense that everything is wonderful

Nausea

In rare cases, anxiety

Nitrous oxide is safe for children, but not all children will be able to use it. Children must be able to put up with having the soft nose piece or mask placed over the nose. They also must be able to breathe through the nose, and follow instructions from the dentist.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are plastic coatings that are usually placed on the chewing (occlusal) surface of the permanent back teeth, molars and premolars to help protect them from decay.

Which teeth are suitable for sealants?

Permanent molars are the most likely to benefit from sealants. The first molars usually come into the mouth when a child is about 6 years old. Second molars appear at about age 12. It is best if the sealant is applied soon after the teeth have erupted, before they have a chance to decay.

Sealants are easy for your dentist to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and may last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.

Why are dental sealants placed on teeth?

The chewing surfaces of the molar and premolar teeth have grooves “fissures” that make them vulnerable to decay. These fissures can be deep, are difficult to clean, and can be narrower than even a single bristle of a toothbrush. Plaqueaccumulates in these areas, and the acid from bacteria in the plaque attacks the enamel and cavities can develop. Fluoride helps prevent decay and helps protect all the surfaces of the teeth, dental sealants provide extra protection for the grooved and pitted areas by providing a smooth surface covering over the fissured area.
Key ingredients in preventing tooth decay and maintaining a healthy mouth are:

brushing twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste

cleaning between the teeth daily with floss or another interdental cleaner

eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks

visiting your dentist regularly

How are sealants applied?

Applying sealants does not require drilling or removing tooth structure. The process is short and easy. After the tooth is cleaned, a special gel is placed on the chewing surface for a few seconds. The tooth is then washed off and dried. Then, the sealant is painted on the tooth. The dentist or dental hygienist also may shine a light on the tooth to help harden the sealant. It takes about a minute for the sealant to form a protective shield.

Enamel, the outer layer of the crown of a tooth, is made of closely packed mineral crystals. Every day, minerals are lost and gained from inside the enamel crystals. Losing minerals is called demineralization. Gaining them back is called remineralization.

Cavities used to be a fact of life. But over the past few decades, tooth decay has been reduced dramatically. The key reason: fluoride. Research has shown that fluoride reduces cavities in both children and adults. It also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay becomes visible. Unfortunately, many people continue to be misinformed about fluoride and fluoridation. Fluoride is like any other nutrient; it is safe and effective when used appropriately. This article will help you learn more about the important oral health benefits of fluoride.

Fluoride supplements (drops, tablets, and lozenges) were introduced in the 1950s as a substitute for fluoridated water for children living in unfluoridated communities. Unlike dietary supplements, fluoride supplements cannot be purchased over the counter, but require a prescription from a dentist or a doctor. Further, unlike most other prescription drugs, however, fluoride supplements have never been approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite fifty years and countless prescriptions to millions of children, the FDA still considers fluoride supplements to be “unapproved new drugs.”

Demineralization begins with the bacteria in the plaque on your teeth. They feed on sugar and other carbohydrates in your mouth and produce acids. The acids dissolve crystals in tooth enamel. The loss of enamel is balanced by remineralization. In this process, minerals in the saliva, such as fluoride, calcium and phosphate, are deposited back into the enamel. Too much loss of minerals without enough replacement leads to tooth decay.

Fluoride helps teeth in two ways. When children eat or drink fluoride in small doses, it enters the bloodstream and becomes part of their developing permanent teeth. Swallowed fluorides also become part of the saliva and strengthen teeth from the outside. Acids are less able to damage tooth enamel strengthened by fluoride.

In addition, people apply fluoride directly to their teeth when they use a fluoride toothpaste or rinse. Both children and adults also can receive fluoride treatments from the dentist. Fluoride applied to the outside of the teeth helps to speed remineralization. Fluoride treatments, applied in the dental office, also are strong enough to disrupt the production of acids by bacteria.

Fluoride prevents the acid produced by the bacteria in plaque from dissolving, or demineralizing, tooth enamel, the hard and shiny substance that protects the teeth. Fluoride also allows teeth damaged by acid to repair, or remineralize, themselves. Fluoride cannot repair cavities, but it can reverse low levels of tooth decay and thus prevent new cavities from forming.

Despite the good news about dental health, tooth decay remains one of the most common diseases of childhood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

more than 25% of 2- to 5-year-olds have one or more cavities

half of kids 12 to 15 years old have one or more cavities

tooth decay affects two thirds of 16- to 19-year-olds

A bacterial oral infection can be caused either by bacteria already present in the mouth or by organisms introduced to the body. Most of the time, bacteria are beneficial. Most bacteria live on the skin and teeth of the body, in the spaces between our teeth and gums, and in the mucous membranes in our body, like those that line our throats. Harmful bacteria enter the body when they spread to us from another person and can also enter the body when the mucous membranes get damaged, creating an easy entry point for the bacteria.

Bacteria from dental caries (a tooth cavity) can extend into the gums, the cheek, the throat, beneath the tongue, or even into the jaw or facial bones. A dental abscess can become very painful when tissues become inflamed or due to the pressure within the abscess. A gum or gingival abscess is the result of infection or trauma to the surface of the gum tissue. Periodontal abscesses are the result of an infection that has moved deeper into gum areas, and a periapical abscess refers to a tooth with an infection of the pulp.

Rarely, the infection can progress to the point at which swelling threatens to block the airway, causing difficulty breathing. Dental abscesses can also make you generally ill, with nausea, vomiting, fevers, chills, and sweats.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dentists who have an extra four to six years of training. Among other things, they are trained to treat infections in the head and neck region. They treat many types of infections. Some are infections of the head and neck that have spread beyond the teeth.

These infections have a few common causes:

An infection of the pulp (center) of a tooth

An infection from a wisdom tooth that has come in only partway

An infection that occurs after a tooth is removed

A gum infection

An infection caused by an injury

An infection caused by blocked flow of saliva

Symptoms of an infection include:

Problems swallowing or breathing (with severe infections)

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your dentist. If your infection is confined to one area, your dentist can often treat it without referring you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. If your dentist is not available and you do not have an oral surgeon close by, you should go to your local emergency room for treatment. You may need a surgeon if:

The infection has spread

The infected area is very swollen

The infection is making you ill

You are having problems swallowing or breathing

Many infections do not spread. But some spread quickly throughout the face and jaw, making it difficult to open your mouth, swallow and control your saliva. There have been reports of infections from teeth in the upper jaw spreading into the brain. In some cases, infections involving teeth on the lower jaw have led to breathing problems. Therefore, you should not ignore signs of infection in the mouth. If you notice a swelling in your head and neck region, including your mouth, go to see your dentist or physician quickly. Then they can diagnose what is causing the swelling and treat it.

The Herbst Appliance promotes jaw growth.

What does the Herbst Appliance do?

The Herbst appliance prevents the lower jaw from moving backward although opening and closing movement still occurs easily. The device is attached to the back molars on the upper and lower jaws with bands that are cemented into place. Patients using the Herbst Appliance do not have any problems learning to chew their food with their lower jaw in this new position.

The Herbst appliance is designed to correct bites and improve facial profiles. The most common bite problem the Herbst® will correct is when the upper teeth protrude too far beyond the lower. We tend to think that the upper jaw and teeth are too far forward but, more often than not, this condition is due to a small lower jaw that is further back than it should be.

The Herbst will encourage the lower jaw to catch up in growth. The appliance is cemented and will work for even the most sensitive patient because a constant force is much less painful and disruptive than intermittent forces, like a head gear, and is much more predictable as far as results. It is called a “functional” appliance because it causes the patient to function (speak, swallow, and eat) in a new jaw position. If the patient functions in this new position for long enough, the change becomes permanent.
It is often necessary to expand the upper jaw while the lower jaw advances, this is done with the addition of a Palatal Expander. The PSA is turned with a special key until the upper jaw is wide enough. The doctor will advise you about using the key and what to expect from this combination.

The Herbst appliance is very effective in correcting large overbites due to small lower jaws in patients who are growing. The Herbst appliance is used to enhance the growth of the lower jaw in a forward direction, while at the same time applying pressure to the upper jaw in a backwards direction. Expansion may also be achieved in the upper jaw if desired.

A tube and rod work together similar to a shock absorber to connect the upper and lower jaws. This does not interfere with opening and closing the mouth or with eating. Side to side movement is somewhat restricted. The Herbst appliance is cemented on the back molars and is in place and active 24 hours a day. It is generally worn full time for 12 months along with front braces. Once it is removed, braces are added to the side teeth for an additional 12 months to complete tooth alignment.
On occasion, the Herbst appliance may become loose and the rods could pop out. Sometimes the rod can easily be popped back in place if it has only come off the groove. If the rod has popped out completely, the orthodontist will need to reattach the piece. Athletes who have this appliance typically have to wear special mouth guards to protect the appliance from being jostled in the mouth.

As with all kinds of braces, patients with the Herbst® need to be careful about what they eat. Hard, sticky, chewy and crunchy foods can loosen the cement and pull the braces from the teeth. Don’t play with the appliance with your tongue or fingers. More braces are damaged by these careless habits than any thing else.

Do you have a minor defect in your pearly whites that you’d like to erase? Seeing your dentist about tooth reshaping, also called dental contouring, could be the answer.

The appearance of the teeth can have a big impact on how the overall smile looks like. Even a single tooth that is misshapen can have a negative impact on the overall appearance of the teeth, with the problem being multiplied if several teeth are affected with shape or contour issues. Misshapen teeth can also affect the way you speak, or even the way you bite or chew and can lead to more serious dental problems if the issue is not addressed in the soonest possible time. In cases when the shape or contours of the teeth need to be improved, tooth contouring offer ideal solutions to these particular issues.

The goal of tooth contouring and reshaping is to change the size or shape of the teeth so that slightly damaged or out of proportion teeth are brought back into alignment with the rest. In essence a cosmetic procedure, it is most often performed on the upper central, lateral, and canine teeth. Beyond the outward benefits, there are often oral health gains, too, as smoothing the teeth and repairing overlaps can make them easier to clean, reducing the risk of the primary consideration for the suitability of cavities and gum disease. Reshaping can also be used to correct minor problems with bite and function.

The dental contouring procedure can even be a substitute for braces under certain circumstances. It is also a procedure of subtle changes. A few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate can create a beautiful smile when performed by a cosmetic dentist, with no discomfort to you. Tooth reshaping, or dental contouring, is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of your teeth.

Advantages of tooth reshaping and dental contouring:

Cost. This is an inexpensive way to improve the look of your teeth. If the defect occurred due to trauma or an accident.

Painless. Because only surface enamel is removed in tooth reshaping and dental contouring, there’s generally no discomfort during the procedure and no anesthesia is required.

Improves health of teeth. Removing minor overlaps and other imperfections where tartar and plaque can build up lowers your risk of decay and gum disease.

Possible substitute for braces. In some situations, tooth reshaping and dental contouring can substitute for braces since they make teeth look a little straighter and eliminate minor overlapping.

Disadvantages of tooth reshaping and dental contouring:

Subtle change. Unlike some cosmetic dentistry treatments, tooth reshaping and dental contouring will not dramatically change the look of your smile or make your teeth look whiter. For a more noticeable smile makeover, you may want to go with veneers. Tooth reshaping and dental contouring only eliminate small imperfections, whereas veneers cover the entire front surface of the teeth, giving them a completely new look.

Risk of tooth damage. Depending on how much enamel is removed during tooth reshaping and dental contouring, teeth can become sensitive afterwards. And if too much enamel is removed, you can be at risk for tooth breakage.
